This product does exactly what it says it does! efficiently too!

this product is 3 bottles pH-up, pH-down and a pH test solution. (also comes with a vial to conduct the pH testing in AND a pipette which I thought was great, I ended up getting on before I opened the package assuming they did not provide one, but General Hydroponics really gives you everything you need to open the package and do testing RIGHT AWAY!)

I tested this on my hydroponic system with a calibrated pH meter hehe.....I wanted to know how accurate the test solution is. The test solution runs on a color scale, acidic being pink basic being dark green. The scale is located ON THE BOTTLE! so you never will lose it. As far as my basic testing concluded, the test solution is accurate; the color changes are visibly recognizable and comparable to the provided scale. 6.0 is yellow, 7.0 is green, and both of these matched my pH meter (in approximation, don't expect to perfectly get a 6.3 or something, this test kit is intended for keeping pH in a safe range, you could play with it and get exactly what pH you want with the assistance of a pH meter but I am judging this based on if a user DID NOT have access to a pH meter going on the test solution only.)

The acid solution is very effective, which is nice, you don't want to use a lot of product to achieve results and end up being in need of more solution spending more $$$. I suggest using this 1-3 drop at a time, waiting 20 mins or so based on water flow and size of your container, and doing another test. Don't over do it, always undershoot what you are aiming for; you will save product and also prevent too acid/basic solution......just be patient, eventually you will understand the power of the acid/base solutions and wont even have to second guess if you put too much in or not.

All in all, this is a must for a hobby hydroponic gardener or even a professional. Having a pH meter is nice, but some times the calibration may be off and having another testing method as provided in this kit is a good safety. I enjoy testing my solutions BOTH with the meter and the test solution because I know with out a doubt if my solution is within the correct pH range.

This will last probably a year or even more depending on how big your system is. Just use sparingly and maybe play with the testing solution with known known acid/base solutions so you can take not of what the ACTUAL color of the liquid will look like in correspondence with the pH. Maybe put some vinegar in the vial, drop some test solution and take note. you will see a bright pink color. add some of the base solution and you will see the color change in the vial....do this before you mess with your actual nutrient solution just to get a feel for the colors!

5 stars for: price, reliability, longevity of the product use and ease of use.

General Hydro is kind of the "big boss" hydro company and they really know what they are doing. Every product thus far I have purchased is good.

I received the whole kit from Canada Trade Corp for my honest opinion. I'm very new to growing house plants. Before receiving this kit and a few other things to help me grow plants successfully from seeds, I didn't know much about growing anything. Canada trade Corp. was very helpful by answering any questions I had and let me know that there were several YouTube videos explaining how all of this stuff worked. You don't need very much of any of the solutions to get the pH balance right. I was able to start coleus, Venus's-flytraps and Jade plants with very little trouble. I really enjoyed learning things from the YouTube videos like, the things to watch out for (good and bad) and they were very helpful in answering any questions that I had. All of my plants are growing fast and they are very healthy and they have the right ph balance for them to keep growing in a healthy soil. It only takes a few drops of th up or down to get the correct balance for your plants so the bottles they sent me are going to last for a very long time. I have really enjoyed growing my plants from seeds into the beautiful plants that they are today. Canada trade Corp. can answer any questions you may have when it comes to their products and know how to help you correct any problems that you may be having with your plants. They have a very friendly customer service team that is ready to help you with all of your growing needs. Thank you very much Canada Trade Corp. for all your help. You have helped turn me from a black thumb into a green thumb!

It arrived in a plastic bag everything came as said. So how it works is you take a sample of the liquid your trying to identify into a container then add a couple drops of the ph solution(small bottle) and it changes the colors. The color to numbers are on the side of the ph solution for example if its lime green your ph is 7. But im color blind and its a little hard to tell but i ask my roomate what color it is and she tells me so it works out.But there is a learning curve which i wish i would of knew that the ph upper is way more powerful then the downer. So at first i tested the ph of my fertilized water and it said green 7.0 so i added a few cap fulls of the upper and i tested it and it went down to 4.0. So then i knew that i should just do a little at a time. Then i added 1 capful of the ph downer it didn't change at all still at 4.0 then many more 1 capfulls later maybe about 5 or 7 it finally turned to were i wanted it to be. So watch out on the upper try very small portions. Anothrr con is you cant tel exactly what the ph level is because you have to go off colors i wish it would tel you exactly 5.4.But in the end it was what i was looking for and works.

I'm no stranger to science (Physics major in college who muddled through Chemistry 101/102), so being familiar with measuring precisely and testing pH was a big plus. It's been a while (decades in fact), but it's like riding a bicycle....LOL. This kit is very simple to use, and it came with an insert detailing how to use the components. I am brand new to hydroponics, so I can't comment on how it compares to other pH buffering products/pH measurement devices. My 10 gallon aquarium (half filled to 5 gal) is on its first trial run. I tested my filtered tap water, added my nutrients in consecutive separate solutions, stirred, and re-tested. I've been able to balance the pH very easily, using small amounts (1 mL using included squeeze pipette) at a time, stirring, waiting an hour, then re-testing. A simple kitchen timer reminds me when to re-test when the latest pH adjuster is well mixed in. So far so good. :) Once I get the solution balanced, I'm sure I won't have to check it as frequently. It's easier to add a little bit, stir, wait, then re-test than to try to correct a pH boomerang situation caused by adding too much at once to 5 gal of nutrient solution.

This is a nice collection of all the basics you need for managing pH, which is an easy way to encourage better plant growth. Comes with instructions and a guide on how pH affects nutrient absorption in your plants - useful info. This seems like it could also be a useful kit for simple science projects and experiments. You can probably find other acids and bases around your kitchen (vinegar, baking soda) but the tester, testing vial, and eyedropper are definitely worth getting. It only takes a few drops of tester for each sample you test, so that should last you a while. The other bottles will most likely last you even longer.

If you've never used pH adjusters like this before, be aware that it really doesn't take much!

They give you an eyedropper for a reason - unless you're working with a very large amount of water/nutrients/etc at once, you can sharply change the pH with just a few drops of one of these compounds. The pH Down (acid/orange bottle) is especially strong. Start small (try a few drops per gallon), mix or shake it up, test again, and adjust as needed.

As title implies, the one of the bottles leaked (PH Down). Not a huge amount, just enough to cause every thing in the bag to get wet and for the cardboard insert (Pic 1) that contains the PH scale to get wet and discolor some.

Picture 2 is showing the moisture on top of bottle. The moisture in the bag was caused because the seal they used to protect the liquid from leaking out of the bottle did not conjoin to the top of bottle properly.

Picture 3 shows a crack in the test bottle, although it is not currently leaking I'm sure it will in the future as the crack has now created a weak area in the structure of the plastic testing bottle.

I did test my water and compared the results with a Ohaus ST20 PH tester a friend of mine has and although the results weren't exactly the same it was close enough for the application i needed it for.

Although I only gave this product a 3 star rating I would still recommend for purchase. Reason being, the two issue I had are most likely not indicators of systemic issues.

My husband and I were new to using PH Formulas and were not sure what one we needed for our water. Since we were new to using it and did not know what we needed, we figured a kit would be the best option. Being able to have both PH up and PH down would be great
We started by looking locally, but the kits were way too expensive and we did not want to buy big bottles of PH up/ down since we didn't know what we would need.
We began looking online and found that the General Hydroponics GH1514 Ph Control Kit was the best price for what we wanted.
We were looking for PH up and PH down, that wasn't huge bottles as we weren't sure what we needed and didn't want to have a big bottle of something we wouldnt use.
We wanted something that wasn't going to break the bank to purchase.
We have been using it for our small kitchen herb garden and its been great. We have had it for over a year and still have tons left.
When we are ready to order again we will probably stick with ordering from HydroFarm.

Incredibly easy to use, even for the first timer.

The packaging conveniently includes a fantastic chart of nutrients and what range of pH those nutrients can be absorbed by the plant.

Simply put a little water in the vial, add 3 drops of pH solution, shake vigorously, then look at the colour. The package includes a pH colour chart, as well as the pH drops bottle colour label (but it is a little off in the colour during printing).

Once you read the pH you have, add a few drops at a time, of pH up or pH down, depending on your application.

Super simple, nothing to be afraid of, but necessary.

If you are growing a hydroponic garden without soil, your pH might run 5.5 or so, but gardeners using dirt will want their pH to be 6.5 to 7.0. Using the wrong pH water can be like pouring acid on your plant. Make no mistake about it, you Need to pH your water every time!

This is a great kit for testing/adjusting ph of nutrient solutions. I have tried many other testers (test papers, strips, electric testers) and this is by far the easiest to use and the most accurate. I was prepared to pay several hundred dollars for nice electric tester but now I'm so glad I didn't...testers like those require constant calibration and various solutions...this kit requires nothing at all, so easy! The ph up and ph down are highly concentrated so go easy on them! You don't want to adjust your solution more than 1.0 ph a day or you could shock your plants!

UPDATE: Ok the PH testing portion of this kit is great, HOWEVER, the ph DOWN solution is terrible. DO NOT USE IT. It is made from phosphoric acid which is bad because if you add it to a nutrient reservoir you will have massive amounts of slime growth within a day or two. Toss the PH DOWN and go get something else.

This is a good product to have if you have limited funds. It comes with pH up and pH down solutions, as well as the test solution.

This was my first pH test kit, and quickly found myself questioning what color to compare to on the chart. This made it difficult to acheive an exact pH number. So I went ahead and ordered a cheap digital meter for $18. With the digital meters, you also need to purchase calibration, storage, and cleaning solutions... All in all will cost you about $35-$50 for the cheap meter and solutions. But don't forget you will still need your pH up and down solutions. Buying the up and down solutions will cost you about the same as this test and control kit. So you might as well get this complete kit and have the test solution on hand as a backup :)

Cheers, I hope this helps your decision making a little easier.
